Transporting commodities across the country is often seen as the major driving function of trucking in India; however, that is not all that trucking does. Trucking has also been an association lifeline in times of disasters and other humanitarian crises. Trucks are able to bring supplies to affected areas either through natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, and cyclones, or through public health emergencies, among others.
One vital point above all the advantages of trucks is that they reach the remotest and most far-from-access places. The unique geography of India, with its mountains, deserts, and sprawling rural hinterlands, creates many logistical problems during times of emergency. Versatile, rugged vehicles like trucks are often the only mode of transport delivering relief supplies, such as food, water, medicines, and tents, to those distant areas.
This includes truck companies and independent truckers, who throw their own lives into the fray during disasters. During the Kerala floods of 2018 or COVID-19 lockdowns, truckers worked day and night, battling access restrictions to deliver essential supplies to the affected communities—an important resource that keeps these communities going.
Beyond transporting the logistics of disaster response, trucking contributes to rebuilding efforts. Through trucks, construction materials and equipment are moved to damaged infrastructure for speedy recovery. Moreover, trucks act as mobile hubs within the emergency environment for supplies or an emergency shelter in severe situations.
These efforts can be made through collaboration with governments, NGOs, and trucking companies. With organised fleets having GPS-enabled vehicles, they can ensure faster delivery and better coordination. Private initiatives, such as truckers volunteering their time and vehicles, are also clear examples of people's efforts towards humanity.
To step up during emergencies, it is only in the interest of the trucking industry that transporting loads becomes possible—they do provide in the making of hope into reality. Their dedicated part in disaster relief and humanitarian efforts goes a long way toward building a resilient and compassionate society.
